SCSILS PROGRAMS a ADOPT A SCHOOL a Projects, Success Stories

" The Garage "

‘the garage’ is an exciting initiative that has been established In Noosaville for 15 – 16 year old students who may be struggling at school who are looking at a possible career in the automotive industry to gain some direction and alternative learning about cars and life skills. ‘the garage’ is a workshop that contains the fundamental components of any mechanical workshop.  It has, however, an education focus with facilities for learning.  An 8 session program has been structured to give the participants a reasonably thorough exposure to the operation and maintenance of vehicles. This course is a very practical ‘hands on’ course where students will learn basic mechanical servicing skills, as well as knowledge and understanding of types of car engines.  The course is not part of an accredited training course, however, the skills and knowledge that students will gain from the course can be transferred to any future mechanical course. It is run by two dedicated men, Gerard Rademaker and Ian Harrison, who want to make a difference to young people’s lives, and have a passion for cars and bikes.

The first intake of students graduated on 11th September , receiving certificates for their learning and dedication to the program, with the second intake is hot on their heels starting on 11th October, SCsILS are compiling a waiting list for students interested in participating next year (subject to funding and sponsorship). Schools able to participate: Coolum State High School, Sunshine Beach State High School, St Andrews Anglican College, Peregian Beach Community College, St Teresa’s Catholic College, Good Shepherd Lutheran College, Noosa District State High School, Kenilworth State Community College & Blackall Range Independent School. Students who have nominated for the course have shown a keen interest in mechanics and are expected to be committed to the eight (8) week course.

It is one of The Garage’s goals is to become a leading provider of personal development to young men within the community.  The workshop creates a fun and inspirational way to achieve this aim of which the participants will also obtain some practical skills.
SCsILS has been able to secure an exciting partnership between Troy Knox from Queensland Automotive Skills Alliance and the Team from the Garage which will hopefully lead to future funding opportunities.

"The Garage ’s" Mission
The mission of ‘The Garage’ is to become a leading provider of personal development for young men.  ‘The Garage’ is dedicated to impacting the lives of young men, setting out the values and successful principles of a fulfilling life.  This will be achieved by:

  1. Communicating the benefits of living right without the condemnation of where they are at - always allowing room for change
  2. Building self-esteem where there is only defeat
  3. Encouraging where there is discouragement felt
  4. Discovering the potential within
  5. Creating hope for the future where there is none
  6. Accepting who they are now with vision of who they can be
  7. Building skills into their lives as well as building character that will enable them to live the life that God has destined them to live
  8. Exposing the participants to automotive workshop practices to enable them to decide if this is the career path they want to pursue
  9. Empowered amongst their peers through the education on how a car works mechanically.

The first round of studentssuccessfully completed the program on 11th September2007.
