Crunch and Munch

A group of students from the Caloundra Lighthouse Special Education Unit have formed a hospitality function team called “Crunch and Munch” in an endeavour to change the perception of students with a disability as under achievers. The Crunch and Munch team are endeavouring to create an image of students with disabilities as students who are enterprise learners and successful achievers in business.

Leoni Humzy- Hancock has mentored the students and taught them how to form a board of Managers with critical leadership responsibilities. The team hold formal committee meetings and have integrated a number of curriculum learning experiences into their business.  For example, financial literacy and numeracy, marketing and computer accounting (MYOB) will ensure their success and maintain their competitive edge.

The Crunch and Munch hospitality team launched their business by catering and serving guests at the opening of SCsILS on 23 June. They have since been engaged by other businesses, including the Caloundra Home and Community Care to cater for Seniors’ Week on 21 August, providing food and service for approximately 200 senior citizens. Through their successful business, the Crunch and Munch team will hopefully change the perception of students with disabilities in the wider community.
